Worm guard is by far the most famous of the lapel guards. When Keenan debuted it (after purposefully holding it back during his brown belt days) it was a shock to the jiu-jitsu system. You will learn all about it in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 goes over Ringworm guard, a variation that differs from worm guard by a single grip. Chapter 6 is possibly the most powerful chapter of the entire course, the Reverse De La Worm guard sounds a little silly, but it is nearly impossible to defend with a backtake / armbar dilemma.

Squid guard is as simple as it is powerful, it targets the other side of the body, with less rotational control, but just as powerful of attacks. Gubber guard is gi rubber guard and it makes closed guard a nightmare for your opponent, with one single grip. In the same vein, lapel lasso guard is a both a great precursor and a way to deal with kneeling passers.

Part 4 was added a few years after the release of Volume 1 and has a chapter on SLX guard reinforced by the lapel. All of the lapel guard system is tricky, but the belt guard chapter will feel the most borderline illegal. Yes, it's possible to perform some very strong moves with just the belt. You will also learn about demi guard, the very last unique mini-system that Keenan developed before retiring from competition.

The lapel guard system evolved at the absolute pinnacle of gi jiu-jitsu, with Keenan competing against the best in the world. When they figured out some of the sweeps, their reactions opened new paths - powerful wrestle ups and graceful exits and transitions to other positions.

What's jiu-jitsu without submission? While most chapters have mentions of submissions available from the specific sub-systems, there is also a separe submission chapter. It features only the most high percentage fight ending sequences.
